Two hands of the same craft, working in conversation. The kurta carries an all-over Ajrakh block print — small pipal leaves scattered across deep indigo, each one laid down by hand in the layered resist-and-dye process that Kutch has practised for generations. The dupatta answers in reverse: fine ivory, left almost bare, with Ajrakh-printed indigo motifs cut and appliquéd onto it by hand, edged with a scalloped indigo border that traces the full length of the fabric.

Appliqué is patient work. Each motif is cut from printed cloth, positioned, turned under, and stitched down by hand — no two placements are identical, and the slight variation is the point.

Natural indigo. Hand block printed. Hand appliquéd. The tonal shifts in the blue and the small irregularities in the block impressions are inherent to the process, not flaws in it.

You may also notice faint gum or paste marks around the appliquéd motifs — this is the natural adhesive used to hold each piece in place while it is being stitched down. It is entirely harmless and washes out completely in the first wash, leaving the cloth clean.
