andwoven Sambalpuri Ikat Cotton Saree in Ivory & Peacock Teal

Woven on a pit loom in Sambalpur, Odisha, this saree carries the bandha tradition — where the yarn is tied and dyed to the pattern before a single thread meets the loom. The soft feathered edges you see on every motif are the signature of true ikat: they can't be printed, and no two pieces resolve exactly alike.

The body is a warm undyed ivory, cool and breathable, scattered with small teal star-floral bandha motifs in staggered rows. Above the border, a band of arrowhead ikat shapes makes the transition. The border itself is a deep peacock teal, edged with fine white and slim aubergine pinstripes.

The pallu turns the scheme over: a dark teal ground carrying horizontal bands of white bandha motifs and fine warp stripes, giving the drape real weight at the fall.

Pure cotton, light enough for long summer days, structured enough to hold a crisp pleat. Made for work mornings, festive lunches, and everything in between.

Wash & Care

First wash
Dry clean only for the first two washes. Natural dyes release excess colour initially, and dry cleaning sets them.

Subsequent washes

• Hand wash separately in cold water with a mild liquid detergent
• Never soak beyond 5 minutes
• No bleach, no detergent with optical whiteners — they dull the ivory and bleed the teal
• Do not wring or twist; press water out gently between palms

Drying
Dry in shade, spread flat or on a wide line. Direct sunlight will fade the teal and yellow the undyed ivory. Turn the pallu inward while drying.

Ironing
Medium heat while slightly damp. Iron on the reverse side. Avoid steam directly on the border.

Storage
Fold in cotton or muslin — never plastic, which traps moisture and yellows cotton. Refold along different lines every few months so creases don't set into permanent lines. Keep a few cloves or neem leaves in the fold instead of naphthalene.
