Handwoven Cotton Jamdani Unstitched Kurta fabric with dupatta – Black Songbirds

The kurta fabric carries a single large motif — a pair of birds in yellow, red, blue and rose, perched along a mint-green branch tipped with soft-gold leaves and pink blossoms. The rest of the panel is left quiet: deep black cotton with the occasional tiny buti, so the birds have room to sit.

The dupatta answers it in miniature. Bands of fine red stripes run across the width, and between them a flock of small red-and-mint birds is scattered across the field. It finishes in hand-knotted black-and-red tassels, with a red selvedge running the length.

Jamdani is a supplementary weft technique — the motifs are not printed or embroidered but woven into the fabric itself, thread by thread, by the weaver's hand while the base cloth is being made. There is no shortcut version of this. A motif of this scale can take a full day's work alone. Small irregularities in the birds or the weave are the signature of the hand, not a flaw.

Cotton Jamdani is light, breathable and unlined — made for long Indian days. It softens with every wash.
