Woven on pit looms in the weaving villages of western Odisha, this Sambalpuri ikat saree carries the quiet precision of the bandha technique — where every yarn is tied and dyed by hand before it ever meets the loom. The pattern is not printed onto the cloth. It is dyed into the thread itself, and the weaver must align each strand so the motif emerges exactly where it should.

A deep black body holds bands of ikat florals in white and crimson, feathered at the edges in the way only true resist-dyeing allows. it has rich madder red, scattered with fine ikat butis and closing in a temple-tipped zigzag against a black ground of kumbha motifs. The border runs in a fine gold-toned thread work, restrained and unhurried.
